The BoatKit apps for iPhone, iPad, and Android can open a nearby vessel directly over its local network or reach a connected vessel through BoatKit Cloud. The boat list, access level, and saved views follow the signed-in account, while local connections avoid an unnecessary trip through the cloud when the device is aboard.
The apps can also host a BoatKit runtime of their own. With no extra vessel hardware, the mobile device contributes its GPS and can hold its own maps, settings, and history. This is enough for a useful standalone chart, weather, route-planning, anchor-watch, camera, dashboard, maintenance, and trip-log setup. The main limitation is lifecycle: a tablet app cannot promise the continuous background operation of a dedicated always-on device.
Platform connections
The native shells provide secure credential storage, supported foreground and background GPS behavior, diagnostic reporting with user consent, and mobile notifications. On Apple platforms, Siri and Shortcuts are available as an explicit opt-in.
Selected tablets can also connect directly to NMEA 2000 hardware. Android supports bounded USB-host SLCAN and Actisense paths. The verified direct iPad path uses a supported M-series iPad, CANable 2.0, and the separately installed iCAN++ DriverKit driver. These are specific hardware configurations, not a claim that every CAN adapter, tablet, power arrangement, or mobile lifecycle will work interchangeably.
