Peplink WAN management

Reserve the BoatKit host on a vessel-local Peplink, measure individual WAN paths, retain their history, and adjust Peplink connection-priority tiers.

Peplink + BoatKit

BoatKit’s Peplink integration is for vessels whose usable internet path changes with coverage, obstruction, marina Wi-Fi, and plan limits. It discovers the real WAN rows shown by the router, groups them by current priority, manages the test routing behind the scenes, and displays an interactive history tape beside each live connection status. The minimum acceptable download rate and normal and low-bandwidth tiers are shared across the performance manager.

The tests are deliberately bounded. BoatKit sends a sequential reverse-mode iperf3 download through each configured WAN, stops as soon as a complete interval meets the WAN’s threshold, and otherwise uses the configurable per-WAN duration cap, which defaults to five seconds including warm-up. Results stay in BoatKit’s time-series history so an administrator can see more than the router’s current snapshot.

Scheduled testing runs after the configured time interval or vessel movement threshold, whichever comes first. Finishing an attempt resets both triggers, even when a router or test error stops the cycle early. Observation mode records history without moving WANs. A separate enforcement opt-in restores the normal Peplink tier after an acceptable result and selects the configured lower tier after a low or failed result.

The target picker covers Leaseweb’s published worldwide iperf3 locations. BoatKit performs only lightweight connection probes when the settings panel opens, sorts reachable targets by latency, and suggests the closest one; the actual bandwidth transfer happens only during a test cycle.

A careful local configuration boundary

Integration discovery can identify Peplink or Pepwave at a known IPv4 LAN gateway by reading its local web-admin entry point over HTTP or HTTPS. A recognizable portal adds the integration disabled with the address filled in; local administrator credentials still require explicit setup. Discovery preserves existing router settings and does not log in, change routing or WAN priorities, or start a performance test. Hosts without gateway inventory and routers using custom portal ports need manual setup.

BoatKit can also find the source interface used to reach Peplink and optionally reconcile a DHCP reservation for its MAC address. Per-WAN tests use narrow, BoatKit-managed outbound rules matched to that interface MAC and the test traffic, so a static DHCP reservation is not required. Disabled and disconnected WANs receive neither managed routes nor speed tests.

For Peplink routers whose HTTPS certificate is issued by a private certificate authority, a Linux-hosted BoatKit vessel can accept an administrator-uploaded PEM CA bundle. BoatKit extends the Linux system root set for the Peplink client only, so the added authority cannot change TLS trust for unrelated integrations. App-hosted iOS and Android vessels do not offer this host-level trust configuration.

Peplink’s published Device API does not expose the LAN and outbound-policy operations this feature needs. BoatKit therefore uses the established API behind Peplink’s local web administration portal. DHCP and outbound-policy writes read fresh state first, preserve fields BoatKit does not own, and refuse to proceed if another administrator has unapplied changes. WAN priority changes use Peplink’s separate instant-active connection-priority operation.

This is an advanced integration rather than a claim of official Peplink API support. Firmware and model compatibility should be verified on the installed router before automatic management is treated as operational policy.

Credentials remain aboard as a write-only device secret and are omitted from portable backups. The custom CA is nonsecret trust configuration and is included with other portable choices, while the attached router’s WAN inventory and scheduling cursor are rebuilt locally.
