BoatKit currently receives NMEA 0183 through a compatible Wi-Fi gateway that exposes the data as TCP or UDP on the vessel network. Several feeds can be configured independently, which keeps older instruments and protocol bridges useful without merging them into one anonymous source. Each configured input retains its own identity and connection state.
Supported navigation, depth, and AIS sentences are decoded into the same source-aware data and instrument models used by other BoatKit integrations. Bare NMEA 0183 wiring therefore needs a serial-to-Wi-Fi gateway before either a tablet or dedicated BoatKit device can consume it today.
BoatKit is looking for hardware and testing partners to validate a direct USB RS-485 input path. That option is shown as under evaluation rather than current compatibility; contact us if you have suitable isolated hardware and a representative vessel installation available for testing.
Output to other applications is a separate NMEA 0183 Gateway integration. Keeping input and output explicit helps document data direction and avoid network loops.
