What you need

Tablet

An app-hosted BoatKit can use AISStream while the tablet is running BoatKit, has internet access, and supplies a current vessel position.

Dedicated BoatKit device

A dedicated device maintains the AISStream session continuously while it is online and can merge cloud reports with onboard AIS sources.

Hardware and network

  • Vessel internet access and a current BoatKit vessel position
  • A configured query radius appropriate to the connection and area

Account or license

Requires a separately obtained AISStream account and API key under AISStream's terms.

BoatKit connects to AISStream with the owner’s API key and maintains a geographic subscription around the vessel as it moves. Supported position and static reports join targets received over NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183, so chart display, vessel details, CPA/TCPA calculations, and remote context do not need a second cloud-traffic interface.

This path requires a current vessel position and continuous internet access. It is useful for additional traffic context, but cloud reports can be late, incomplete, or unavailable and do not replace an onboard receiver or a proper lookout.

AISStream is a separately operated third-party service with its own account and terms. BoatKit’s support does not imply affiliation with or endorsement by AISStream.
